The 'Dark Night of the Soul' is not just one night. It is a journey into spiritual maturity and connectedness with our truest nature and the Divine source. This journey can completely undermine our best intentions and deplete our resources. What to do? -Trust -the Divine nature which you are knows intuitively what is in alignment with the universal balance. -Remind yourself daily that this is normal for the transformation you are undergoing. -Stay connected with our community…our SOUL ZOOM ROOM -this journey is supported by the knowing that we are sharing this experience -join our Healing and Deep Listening Circles. -Invite other like minded women to join us in this journey-it is comforting to have friends on the same path. -Listen and hone your INTUITION-it is the cord to your heart and your heart is the cord to the Divine.💜 -Give yourself a break, back off of too many 'shoulds'-this is the act of SELF CARE essential for this journey. -As much as possible focus in on activities that calm you, give you a sense of fullness and connectedness with self and the Divine. -Incorporate PRAYER into your day. -Incorporate new micro practices DAILY-keep it fresh and inspiring -explore the YOU which is emerging. -We are simply the chrysalis struggling to emerge as the Butterfly-fully capable of soaring freely- this takes time and some struggle. 🦋

From this place you will overflow with healing light. Even if you are not able to sit for the 11 minutes, set your attention/intention to hold the sacredness of this possibility for healing. Let your mind land upon the petals of this exquisite flower. Stillness, presence, possibility. The world needs you now. 🧡 You are a spark of the Divine. Your contribution to the whole is beyond understanding or measure. You fit as a puzzle piece; supporting the manifestation of the divine story in all of its perfection. The wisdom of self is unfolding; trust, surrender, love with abandon. Deep Listening Circle Please Join! Ongoing Friday Morning 9am-10am PT All Welcome! Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85306974463?pwd=ZHlsNHRhNkwrVnhmblI5MEt0RXpsUT09 Deep listening is the practice of truly being present, sitting with another and listening, without giving advice or suggestions, without making a judgement of any kind. Deep listening is also the practice of listening to yourself, to what is bubbling up inside of you as you are given precious time to sit with yourself, to be present and honor the words that might come. In our circle each woman will be given an equal amount of time to speak. That time is hers. She can do whatever her heart desires with that time, she can talk, cry, meditate, and we will hold that space for her. Sometimes it is in the silence that we truly hear what is on our heart, what wants to be spoken. This can feel uncomfortable, to be silent, to wait for words. Deep listening is a practice and a wonderful opportunity to show up for ourselves and for each other. So we invite you to sit with your time, as you are held in safe loving arms. There is no right response, no right way here. All emotions are accepted and honored.

As taught in the Buddhist tradition. 1st Wonderful Sound-the sound of nature rain birds, thunder, icebergs breaking apart; the natural world. 2nd One Who Observes the World-the sound of listening both internally and externally through observation and awareness-be witness to LIFE. 3rd Brahma Sound -transcendental sound OM-the sound which creates, the primal universal sound or God. 4th Sound of Rising Tide-Voice of Teacher, one who clears away misunderstanding removes afflictions and transforms. 5th Sound that Transcends All Sounds in the World-the sound of impermanence -reminder not to get caught up in or too attached to particular words, sounds, encumbrances. LIFE it is all impermanent except our eternal nature.

6)Dharana-strict concentration on one object or task, a state in which there are no distractions. We have used Trataka-candle gazing in our meditation. When in this level of focus or concentration, all hindrances disappear as you deepen into that which you are concentrating upon. Practice: Choose an object or a task, focus on this exclusively….follow you attention, when it wanders, consciously bring it back to the object or task…practice being in awareness of yourself, your body, your mind, your attention, your whole being is an art…. 7)Dhyana-meditation, a state in which you experience the sacred through a deeply focused awareness This brings us into relationship with the whole and the importance of it all. This gives us the opportunity for bliss on a higher plane. Practice: Meditation is the foundation of consciousness, it is the practice of clearing our mind and deepening our understanding of existence…there are many paths into meditation. chanting, mantra, loving kindness practice -Try using this metta practice-we believe what we say May I be happy May I be healthy May I be safe May I be free from suffering First offer this to yourself, then expand to someone you love, someone who is neutral, to someone you despise and finally to all sentient beings. 8)Samadhi-the culmination of practicing all of the other limbs of of yoga which brings you to an understanding of truly knowing and feeling that everything is interconnected….the ultimate sense of being a part of the whole and experiencing BLISS. In this state clinging disappears, and the mind construct of control, fear and over organizing diminishes. Practice: Wake up to your life NOW, unless some planning is necessary, make a practice of bringing yourself back to now over and over aGAIN…smell, taste, see, hear the smallest of details of your movement which comprises your day…notice how your rhythm syncs with nature…with other humans…

Every April for six years, the Bewick's wrens have arrived in our garden. Though John, my partner, barely notices their presence as he heads up the wooden steps leading to the garage. His thoughts probably focusing on the drive to his law office in San Francisco and the possible tortures of the commute ahead. It’s April again, I’m watching the blossoming white wisteria and pale pink flowers of the weeping cherry. So much beauty. But what I’m really waiting for are those tiny wrens, flicking and waving their long fan-shaped tails. These birds provide a touchstone to my life. Especially during this year, Covid year, the year that John is dying from a progressive lung disease. During John’s last eight months, as his landscape shrinks and he can no longer leave the property, his focus becomes concentrated on the garden and wildlife. So that April of 2020, the seventh year of the bird’s arrival, it is John who first notices their activity in the blue and white bird house. A bird house placed high enough so raccoons and rats can't raid it. Under an overhang, protecting it from the noonday sun. Situated between two live oaks which are the ultimate launching site for the parents to access the birdhouse dollar sized aperture. Always with the precision of a dart hitting the bullseye. When the birds first arrive, their presence is experienced as a shadow of movement in the garden and John, even from his own perch in his brown leather chair in the kitchen, is uncertain if they have really arrived. But after a day or so, he aligns himself with their patterns. He celebrates the return, raising his glass of vodka and grapefruit juice at the cocktail hour, his hazel eyes expressing more light than I have seen in the two years since his diagnosis. The bird’s arrival offers the promise of new life. And now John notices all the details. The birds’ back and forth to their nest. The around fourteen days of incubation as the male brings food for the female. John is the spotter, counting those back and forths whilst speculating: Are the babies opening their eyes? Developing feathers? Making their first feeble tweets? As the babies demand for food increases, their calls and cries become strident and strong. But if I were to put one foot on the steps to the garage, the squawking stops. No matter how quiet and unobtrusive I am, a cry comes from somewhere in the garden, transmitting a signal of danger to the babies. Each signal is followed by a silence until the approaching danger disappears. But the danger for John has become part of our daily lives as his lungs weaken and the fibrocystic tissues consuming his alveoli advances. These days bring a greater need for oxygen. He loses weight and interest in food. He sleeps longer and falls a number of times. Eventually, he submerges his pride and agrees to use a walker. But even as his body weakens his joy with the wrens increases. There are other joys that spring and summer. The hummingbirds in the Columbine and salvia. The ballet like grace of the wisteria fronds floating on the breeze. I sit with him in the garden, his face drawn and thin but always expressing a belief that he is part of a greater whole, and as much as his life is receding, he is also assimilating the new life of the wrens, the Oregon juncos, and at the same time, enjoying small tastes of the garden’s blackberries, apples, plums, and grapes. New life that feeds both of us with pleasure and sadness, whilst we are facing the truth of his dying. A place we step into but where we rarely linger. We both know in 2021 that I will be experiencing the next generation of Bewick's wrens alone. John died on March 20, 2021, on the afternoon of the spring equinox. Leaving not long before the arrival of the wrens in early April. During that painful time, I waited for the dance of new life to begin, feeling the anticipation for both of us. One morning, I saw what could be the flash of a Bewick's wing. Had I imagined the swift shadow of movement? No, in that moment, I felt the energy and spirit of John close to me, reassuring me that no matter how great my pain that the birds were really back and his spirit will be with me in the continuing process of life.

3)Asana-our physicality -The physical practice of yoga Use the alignment of our body to match with the alignment of the universe. Use asana for grounding, expanding, balance, energizing, aligning with itself. Practice: Choose ONE asana-one yoga pose-(Use YOUTUBE if you need a visual) Use it to stretch your body, focus your mind, lose yourself in the asana, begin with the pose where you can meet it, allow it to grow and expand as you repeat several times each day. One great choice is Tree pose. It covers balance, the third eye, our intuition, and strengthens our connection to Earth and the Heavens. 4)Pranayama-the focus on the breath Teaches us to harness the power of our own life force, chi, fiat ! Practice: Bhastrika or sniffing dog -Sit in a comfortable posture -Take a deep breath in through your nose -Exhale forcefully through your nose and then quickly inhale forcefully through your nose. Repeat this cycle of breathing in and out at a rapid pace. You will sound like a sniffling dog. Do for 30 breaths, pause, take a few deep breaths. Repeat for three cycles of 30 breaths each. 5)Pratyahara-withdrawing of the sense, abandoning our tether to our senses so that the level of distraction in our daily life decreases. Allows us to gently embrace silence, quietude, internal peace. Practice: We live in an environment of sensory overload. You may think you are rather balanced in what you take in through your senses however, you will most certainly be surprised if you take a day or two to withdraw and return to the world of sensory overload. Usually sound/sight are the most obvious heightened senses… -Reduce your social media input to 15 minutes/per day -Limit TV/Computer time. Choose a specific time of the day to interact with electronics rather than spreading it throughout your day. -Notice how much noise you intentionally orchestrate in your life, in the car, in hour house, on the phone- Turn off sound makers in your home….music, TV, phone-silence sound OR SIMPLY BE IN SILENCE FOR 24 HOURS-PICK ONE DAY PER WEEK

Niyamas are our relationship with our internal world. Niyamas are broken down into 5 habits or aspects. 1)Saucha-purity and cleanliness-to keep the energy of our body, mind and life flowing in harmony. Purity of the body, mind and spirit. Practice: Breath is a great purifier. Lions Breath clears mind and detoxes body. Seated position breathe in deeply through nose, exhale by opening your mouth as wide as possible and stick out your tongue and roar the breath out like a lion. 2)Santosha-contentment and gratitude have a mindset of abundance rather than scarcity, believe there is enough for you in this life which helps to unleash your generosity. Practice: Get yourself a chalkboard/whiteboard and in the morning write 3 things that jazz you about yourself/your life/your vision/your relationships and three things you know you have in abundance in your life. Total of 6 notes to self on whiteboard. 3)Tapas-discipline -yogic practice or other life disciplines. Practice: Pick one aspect of your life where you would like to implement a change-commit to a practice or routine that addresses this aspect. Commit to 40/48 days called a mandala - to establish this new routine or practice. Write this on the bottom of your whiteboard to remind yourself of your new Tapas. 4)Svdhyaya-self reflection and self study, inner reflection. Practice: What are you interested in? What could you explore though books, movies, music-find an avenue, and increase your curiosity to something new that penetrates your shell. Pick up a new hobby that has intrigued you for awhile, join a friend in one of her hobbies. 5)Ishvara Pranidhana-devotion or surrender, chant OM to surrender yourself to whole of the universe as well as surrender yourself to yourself. Deepen into yourself. Practice: Universal sound, the primordial sound of creation penetrates all=OM=AUM Chant OM for 11 minutes daily to deeply connect yourself to creation. EnJOY

Yamas are the ethical principles that clarify one’s relationship to the world and everything in it. Yamas are broken down into 5 aspects: -Ahimsa-Do no harm to yourself, to others or to the planet we are here to protect. Practice: Start with tiny creatures…spiders, ants, and other small aliveness. Do no harm; relocate little creatures while honoring the value to ALL LIFE. -Satya-Honesty to self and others. Practice: Use your words to practice honesty to self and others. Slow down your speech and select your words very carefully to both convey exactly what you wish to communicate as well as articulating only the pieces of truth; not story built out of fear, control, denial or self interest. BE A TRUTH SPEAKER. -Asteya-No stealing (not just objects, dignity, beauty, truth) Practice: One limited aspect to our life is TIME. How do we steal time from ourselves and others? How do you honor others time? Are you on time- late, distracted, or unfocused? How do you honor the value of your own time? Make a point of being on time and focused for yourself and others. TIME IS LIMITED IN THIS LIFE. -Bramacharaya-The wise use of creative energy. Not just sexual energy, all energy-do not give your energy away or hoard it…be in balance. Practice: If you wish to manifest, create and co-create you must learn to control your energy, your life force. Not physical movement- practice watching your energy/life force output…where are you simply spinning wheels, letting your mental gyrations keep you putting out fictitious fires and burning up your creative energy? Pay attention to where your energy is used…which relationships, conflicts, worry, the unknown suck up your energy? Where is it prudent to use your energy? This is all a choice. In spite of the drama around you, you can choose to not let your life force be high-jacked. When we are manifesting and creating, and co-creating, we are energized, not drained. -Aparigraha-Non possessiveness moving from greed to generosity of spirit, of heart, of love, to self and others. Possessiveness can be a cover for insecurity, sense of unworthiness, or lack in your life. Possessiveness around relationships, food or objects does not translate into Peace. Practice: Next time you are craving to take, buy or consume something (food) sit quietly for a moment and ask yourself ….do you want it or need it? What loneliness or emptiness are you imagining it will fill? Can you step back for the urgency of purchase/gain and sit with it…detach yourself from the habit/knee jerk/must have of objects, emotions, food, and take a breath, detach, ask again if this purchase, item, craving is really needed in your life. See what is underneath of the desire to possess something? Under the emotional need. Address that emptiness rather than filling up with objects, people, food, or other 'collectables.' Be generous with yourself in truth, love, acceptance, non judgment. This will empower your acceptance of others and their challenges. EnJOY♥️

Today we touched upon the power of the Divine Feminine as expressed by Mary Magdalene in the writing attributed to her-The Gospel of Mary. The re-emergence of Mary and a renewed awareness of her importance in the Christian story is an essential remembering of the Feminine. She, Mary, is part of the story of the Matriarch in a time of Patriarchy. Mary’s life journey was a spiritual exploration in uncharted territory. As we embrace the Divine Feminine we can be inspired by women who have gone before us; women who has found the deep river of sustenance which feeds the soul. Mary had a particular perspective which her writings explore. She received profound individual teachings from her teacher, Jesus. The teaching on “HARMONY” illustrates the value Jesus placed on our individual responsibility to cultivate harmony in ourselves and in the world. Through this harmony, we inhabit our highest self-our place of JOY. We continue our 28 Day Challenge AND invite you to jump in-anytime is perfect. 28 minutes a day to deepen your connection to self-to the expression of the feminine. Cultivate HARMONY in your being, in your world and in the expansive world around you. WEEK TWO MONDAY AUGUST 9- SUNDAY AUGUST 15th This 28 minute session can be done anytime during your day. Notice the tone of these heart/devotional songs. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6ziDeX2VMVGjVI5HzDRhFq?si=48a4fe596858460b 12 minutes sitting on earth under a tree or in the sun OR sit on a bench/chair with bare feet touching Mother Earth. The point is to connect your physical body with the vibration of the planet. This is grounding for both your energetic and physical body. While sitting use the 12 minutes as you connect with the earth vibration to play with your creativity. If you wish to continue the writing prompt, please write about your spiritual journey, when it began in earnest, how it has changed over time and where you would like to see it deepen. What are the challenges to this journey? If you wish to engage your creativity with another form- try coloring, drawing, painting, writing a poem, or dancing on the earth’s surface for the 12 minutes. Try something we do not usually engage with-explore your creativity beyond the usual. Finish session with the preparation of the Cantaloupe and Vanilla Smoothie (from recipe above) to refresh and nourish yourself. EnJOY your day. Days 2-7 Same as Day 1 with exception of alternating the writing prompt with other creative endeavors of your choice, some listed above. Spotify music list new each day with new Heart Mantra/Song #8-#14 . EnJOY! Asana Image

WELCOME TO OUR 28 MINUTE 28 DAY CHALLENGE AUGUST 2-29 August is the spiritual power month during the year. It holds the energy of completion, loose ends tied, past healings observed and a brighter future. Let us capture the essence of August with our conscious awareness of our longings, desires, pleasures, habits and judgments. Let’s explore ourselves!! It is time to embrace the Divine Feminine; the deep Feminine, the mystery of consciousness. She who is life, is longing for our transformation. When we make space for Her, she rushes into all the gaps, engulfing us with her desire for life and expression. We simply need to slow down and find where to put our conscious attention. It is this, this willingness to look again, this willingness to put consciousness onto our places of the unconscious, to express what we have always avoided, which starts the process of unblocking, so that She may flow through. Let us commit 28 minutes each day for the next 28 days as we become witness our inner and outer selves. WEEK ONE MONDAY AUGUST 2- SUNDAY AUGUST 8th This 28 minute session can be done anytime during your day. Preferably with the full 28 minutes strung together. The session will be the same each of the 7 days with the exception of the writing prompts and mantra, which change daily. Each subsequent week will be a new 28 minute session! DO AHEAD FOR WEEK -Grocery List for Juice/Smoothie (X 7 for the week) Half a bunch of celery, 1 cucumber, 1 lemon, 1 big apple, 1 inch ginger - all through the juicer. Using our five senses to shift our attention in the moment, so we might re-group, slow down and reclaim our equanimity and balance. This can decrease anxiety, frustration, judgment and disturbance in any given situation. Sight One way to slow down a runaway mind is to fix one of your senses on a single object. -Choose an object in your immediate environment or your mind’s eye. -Simply focus your attention on the object; the color, texture and any other defining qualities. -If you find yourself drifting back to a place of disturbance, choose a different object to focus on. -If the situation allows, close your eyes as you hold the object in your minds eye. Sound -Pay attention to whatever sounds can be heard around you. -As an alternative, listen closely to music, preferably without lyrics to ponder. Set up play-list ahead of time!!! Smell -You may have noticed that the sense of smell is strongly connected to memory and emotions. -If you’re scent-oriented, carry a small vial of fragrant essential oil, such as lavender or rose, for easy access. Taste -Put something edible in your mouth. If you know a stressful situation is coming up…keep something in your pocket-hard candy, or gum. -If food is not available, take the same approach with a beverage. Focus on swallowing and the path of the liquid. Touch Touch is the most immediately grounding of the senses. -Touching an object absorbs the attention, and nothing could be more convenient or inconspicuous. -Place your hand firmly on a table or the arm of a chair; hold whatever is in your pocket, clasp your hands. -Beads, devotees of all traditions often carry a talisman in a pocket or purse, or pin one to their clothing, or attach an amulet to a necklace or bracelet. -Prayer Mala can be worn around your neck or wrist for easy access. -Carry a small picture of a revered person, a religious figurine, or a keepsake that brings to mind serenity, A small gift from a loved one or a colorful stone you brought home from a beach vacation. With practice you will automatically call upon one of these micro practices when needed. Creating space between a situation and your reaction allows you to maintain equanimity and to respond in a manner that most reflects your highest intentions. Additional simple micro practices: -Get Absorbed in an Activity -Spend Time with Children -Hang out with animals -Help Someone -Let It all Out -SMILE -LAUGH -LEARN SOMETHING NEW

Spirit House member and facilitator, Lorna Boich Vander Ploeg, wrote this beautiful poem addressing the journey of willingness in our spiritual lives. Always, it comes down to whether or not we are willing to take the path less traveled. EnJOY. Am I Willing? Am I willing to allow the threads of identity to fray, knowing that each thread holds firmly in place the me I'm accustomed to believing? Am I willing to cast aside my navigational maps, the ones I so diligently pieced together, the ones that keep my attention tightly bound to some imagined route of travel. Am I willing to let go of the comfortable illusion that life is traveling toward some predictable destination? Am I ready to abandon all my well thought out plans for this timeless dance with the mysterious? Am I willing to surf each rising and falling breath with absolute focus? To surrender to each divine moment as the naked ferocity of life devours me? Am I willing to be unconditionally available to such devastating joy? Am I willing?

The Five Koshas as described in the Upanishads. 1.Annamaya kosha-Physical Body -Food sheath, Earth element -The grossest or densest layer-the physical body (organs, bones, muscle tissue, and skin) -Anna means “food” or “physical matter” and maya means “made of.” To ENLIVEN the Annamaya kosha: -Move body through asana, outdoor activities, dance, play -Eat mindfully -Hydrate 2.Pranamaya kosha: Energy Body -Vital sheath, Water element -The energetic body is composed of the body’s subtle life-force energy prana, also known as chi in Traditional Chinese Medicine. -Pranamaya kosha is the animating force behind every atom, cell, organ, and body system. -Prana coordinates every physiological activity, from the pumping of the heart to the elimination of waste. -Imbalances or blocks within this energetic body greatly affect the overall function of the physical body. -Prana is closely related to the breath—you receive prana upon the air you breathe. -When breath is shallow and sporadic, your prana is also erratic. -Unstable pranic energy causes the mind to become agitated and the body’s various systems irregular. -Smooth out the breath, and prana becomes more stable, the mind gets calmer, and all the body’s living systems function more optimally. -The body’s subtle energy greatly influences the state of the mind, which is the next layer of self. To ENLIVEN the Pranamaya kosha: -Breathe consciously with awareness and utilize breath exercises. 3.Manomaya kosha: Mental Body Mental sheath, Fire element -The third layer corresponds to your mind, emotions, and nervous system. -From manas, which means “mind” or “thought processes.” -Expressed as streams of thoughts, feelings, and sensations. -Many of us have an overactive manomaya kosha that wears on our nervous system and plays out through our emotions. -Yoga helps calm our minds and soothe our nervous systems, allowing you to recover from the effects of stress and fatigue. -Your mental body is also where we experience the five senses and where we receive, absorb, and process input from the world around us. -When you go on autopilot and zone out, you’re operating from your manomaya kosha. How to ENLIVEN the Manomaya kosha: Best through meditation or mind relaxing activities where mind lets go. 4.Vijnanamaya kosha: Wisdom Body Intellectual/Intuitive sheath, Air element -You begin working with the first three koshas as soon as you start practicing yoga/meditation. -Coordinating your breath with your movement brings you present on your mat—synchronizing your physical, energetic, and mental bodies. -This layer, your wisdom body, takes a little more internal awareness that is cultivated over time. Beneath the constant stream of thoughts, feelings, and sensations lies an inner knowing and higher intelligence in your wisdom body. -Your intuition, conscience, and the reflective aspects of your consciousness are all part of your wisdom body. HOW to ENLIVEN the Vijnanamaya kosha: -Practice awareness of self -Note when you are in a state of intuitive flow and creative expansiveness -Acknowledge your cultivation of your complete self -Be in gratitude for your desire to experience the fullness of self. 5.Anandamaya kosha: Bliss Body Bliss Body/ether/space element -The deepest layer of our being is the core of our existence. -Often referred to as your highest self or spirit. -The bliss body is where you experience the unbounded freedom, expansiveness, and joyousness of your true nature. -Connection with this kosha is like coming home. -There’s a sense of peace and connectedness during which time ceases to exist and your consciousness expands beyond the limits of your body. Enliven the Anandamaya kosha: Nothing to do but enJOY the fruits of your conscious awakening.
